You may be wondering...

> What does it cost?
> How long does it take?
> Do you also do oral translations?
> Why should I hire you? I always use Google Translate and it’s great.

It is fantastic that machine translations exist and there are definitely moments when Google Translate comes in handy. However it is crucial to remember that such machine translations are only approximately 70% correct. Therefore it is important to keep in mind what you need the translation for. The example below may illustrate that you would not want to use Google if you need to work or publish the text, or if you need to present it to clients to inform them about your business.

Example:
On 25 June 2013, we could read in the Guardian:

“Cuts of up to £2bn from the education budget in Wednesday's spending review would wipe out the UK's decade-long rise up international league tables for investment in education, according to data published by the OECD.”

Google translates this as:
„Cuts von bis zu 2 Mrd. GBP aus dem Bildungs-Budget am Mittwoch im Spending Review ausgelöscht würde der britischen jahrzehntelange Anstieg der internationalen Liga Tabellen für Investitionen in Bildung, nach Angaben der OECD veröffentlicht.“

If your German is not that good, you have no way of knowing that this sentence is very confusing, to put it mildly. The only way for you to find out is to feed this translated sentence back into Google. The result reads:

“Cuts would be wiped out by up to £ 2 billion from the education budget in Wednesday's Spending Review, published by the British decadeslong
rise in international league tables for investment in education, according to the OECD.”

If you only cared to know that the education budget would be affected by cuts, Google served you just fine. If you needed the entire context, or needed content for professional uses, it would have been useful to invest in a real translator. Where? Right here at Ample Translations…
